In one of the largest-ever studies of genetics and autism, researchers have identified 24 new gene variants associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The work also confirms that 31 variants previously linked to the developmental disorder may serve as useful genetic markers for identifying those with the condition.
Understanding autism’s genetic roots is a priority, researchers say, since it may lead to earlier diagnosis and behavioral intervention, which can improve patient outcomes.

An autistic man who was caught eating food without paying at a Wisconsin Whole Foods Market was asked to leave and not come back unless he's on a leash, according to his outraged family.
On January 2, Emily Goldstein took her brother, Michael, shopping at the Whole Foods supermarket on North Avenue in Milwaukee.

The 26-year-old man suffers from autism, which makes it difficult for him to communicate, so when he was confronted by security guards after snatching  some hot food from a tray, he could not explain himself.
