Octomom, Nadya Suleman, takes break from soft-core porn to blame messy house on kid with autism

Octomom, Nadya Suleman, takes break from soft-core porn to blame messy house on kid with autism

As entertaining as Ann Coulter has proved to be over the last few days, it's time to move on to more important subjects.  Like ... The Octomom blaming her kid with autism for her house being trashed.  Since he was the only one mentioned, I can only assume that this child has more destructive energy than the other 13 kids in her collection ...  combined.  Damn, woman, you have a small army to help you keep house.  Spend a little less time doing soft-core porn and a little more organizing your little platoon.
Nadya Suleman is making headlines for the umpteenth time in the past few weeks, this time for a video in which she blames her young autistic son for trashing their family's La Habra home last year. This sounds pretty awful on its face, and Nadya Suleman typically comes across as anything but a stable individual, but hold on. Might there be something to her claims that her seven-year-old son, quite possibly more destructive than most children his age due to his disorder, wreaked some major havoc?

If that is indeed the case (and of course, no one but Octomom knows for sure what goes on in her household), we are glad she has taken what sounds like the appropriate measures to remedy or at least help the situation, give her son boundaries and keep her new house in good repair. Linked to Autism: Genetic Link to Schizophrenia?

Are schizophrenia and autism close relations?

New research by Dr. Mark Weiser of Tel Aviv University's Sackler Faculty of Medicine and the Sheba Medical Center has revealed that ASD appears share a root cause with other mental illnesses, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. At first glance, schizophrenia and autism may look like completely different illnesses, he says. But closer inspection reveals many common traits, including social and cognitive dysfunction and a decreased ability to lead normal lives and function in the real world.
Studying extensive databases in Israel and Sweden, the researchers discovered that the two illnesses had a genetic link, representing a heightened risk within families. They found that people who have a schizophrenic sibling are 12 times more likely to have autism than those with no schizophrenia in the family. The presence of bipolar disorder in a sibling showed a similar pattern of association, but to a lesser degree.

Autism drug study targets communication and social limitations - South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com

Autism drug study targets communication, social limitations - South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com

Though there are medications approved for treating irritability, anxiety and aggressive behavior in children with autism, Ventre said, none have been cleared for mitigating impaired social interaction and communication skills.
Right now, memantine is approved only for the treatment of Alzheimer's symptoms in the elderly, and the doses used in this study would be adjusted to levels appropriate for pediatric patients.
Children ages 6 to 12 with a confirmed diagnosis of autism, Asperger's and PDD-NOS from throughout Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties are invited to participate. The study would last 50 weeks and require up to 13 visits to Research Centers of America offices, according to the ConnectMe website, ConnectMeTrial.com.
Participating in the study is free and voluntary, and parents can decide to remove their children at any time.

Controversial autism DR loses license elsewhere, but can still practice in Missouri, Illinois

Controversial autism doctor loses license elsewhere, but can still practice in Missouri, Illinois : Stltoday

Dr. Mark Geier has opened eight autism treatment clinics called ASD Centers across the country but is only allowed to practice at two of them — in St. Peters and Springfield, Ill.
Missouri and Illinois are among the last states to seek discipline against Geier, whose hormone therapy for children with autism has been called dangerous, abusive and exploitive by various medical boards.
In the last two years, his medical license has been revoked or suspended in California, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Texas, Virginia and Washington.
Missouri, Illinois and Hawaii have filed complaints against Geier based on other states' actions, but his license remains active in all three states. A disciplinary hearing in Geier's case is set for Oct. 19 before the Missouri Board of Registration for the Healing Arts in Jefferson City.

Autism and the Mystery of The Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP)

"Autism and the Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) Mystery" sounds like a really bad episode of Scooby Doo.  Learn about SNPs at The University of Utah: Genetic Science Learning Center.

Important Breakthrough In Our Understanding Of Autism Risk
The causes of autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are complex, and contain elements of both nature (genes) and the environment. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Molecular Autism shows that common genetic polymorphisms (genetic variation) can add up to an increased risk of ASD.

The contribution of inheritance and genetic mutation versus environmental factors to the risk of ASD is hotly debated. Most twin studies show the contribution heavily tilted toward inheritance, but the exact amount of involvement of genes in ASD risk is less apparent. This is because, while the impact of rare genetic variations on ASD risk is becoming clear, the role of more common variations, so called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP), remains unresolved.
The Gist:

Researchers analyzed one million of the common gene variations in each participant's genome and determined that in families with only one affected child, heredity was the root cause of 40%, the other 60% are presumed environmental in nature. Families where more than one child has autism see these numbers flipped.  The chance of heredity being the root issue increases to 60% in these cases.

Video of autistic child being beaten provokes Internet outrage - CNN.com
A closed-circuit television clip, posted and shared on Chinese social media and reported by the local press this week, has triggered sympathy and outrage here in China.
The footage purportedly shows a four-year-old girl with autism being manhandled and beaten by a female assistant at a children's rehabilitation center in the southern city of Guangzhou.
The girl apparently collapsed and lost consciousness as other adults looked on passively. She was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, Chinese media reports said.Chine

Brain plasticity and autism, New study provides hope

White matter study shows brain capable of learning complex tasks well into adulthood

"This work is contributing to a new understanding that the brain stays this plastic organ throughout your life, capable of change," Schlegel says. "Knowing what actually happens in the organization of the brain when you are learning has implications for the development of new models of learning as well as potential interventions in cases of stroke and brain damage."
