Possible cause of Autism #736,273 - Depressed Moms

New to the list, depressed moms.  The more depressed, the more autism.  Antidepressants are A-OK, no problemo. Also, Old clever moms who use their cell phone while watching TV in the rain are at even greater risk of having a kid with autism.

Hyper-connected neurons may cause autism?

Hyper-connected neurons may cause social symptoms in autistic children - Medical News Today

The brains of children with autism show more connections than the brains of typically developing children do. What's more, the brains of individuals with the most severe social symptoms are also the most hyper-connected. The findings reported in two independent studies published in the Cell Press journal Cell Reports challenge the prevailing notion in the field that autistic brains are lacking in neural connections.
The findings could lead to new treatment strategies and new ways to detect autism early, the researchers say. Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting nearly 1 in 88 children.

It was thought the woman’s age was key to a child’s health, but researchers found older fathers pass down the majority of the faulty genes linked to conditions such as autism and schizophrenia. 
Scientists in Iceland discovered 97 per cent of genetic mutations were caused by the age of the father, while the mother’s age had no effect at all.  
The child of a 40-year-old dad had a two-and-half times as many potentially damaging mutations as the offspring of a 20-year-old, and they increase with every passing year, the authors said.  
Experts say the study raises the possibility that men in their 30s should freeze their sperm if they are planning to have children late in life.  
While it was suspected that the trend towards late fatherhood may be related to rising rates of autism, this study is the first large-scale test.

Scientists find how faulty gene causes brain changes in autism | Business Standard


Scientists have discovered how a defective gene in autistic people triggers brain changes that lead to behavioural disorders. 
Researchers from the University of California - Davis Health System Institute found that a defective gene called 'pten' reduces energy production in neurons leading to brain changes which cause antisocial and prolonged repetitive behaviour- traits found in autism.

Mutations in three genes, AKT3, PIK3R2 and PIK3CA, were also found to be associated with a constellation of disorders including cancer, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, autism, vascular anomalies and skin growth disorders."

    Another novel mouse model for autism yields amazing clues AGAIN

    Novel mouse model for autism yields clues to a 50-year-old mystery


    Serotonin is a brain chemical that carries signals across the synapse, or gap between nerve cells. The supply of serotonin is regulated by the serotonin transporter (SERT). In 2005, a team of Vanderbilt researchers led by Randy Blakely and James Sutcliffe identified rare genetic variations in children with ASD that disrupt SERT function.
    In a new study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the researchers report the creation of a mouse model that expressed the most common of these variations. 
    The change is a very small one in biochemical terms, yet it appears to cause SERT in the brain to go into overdrive and restrict the availability of serotonin at synapses.
    "The SERT protein in the brain of our mice appears to exhibit the exaggerated function and lack of regulation we saw using cell models," said Blakely, director of the Vanderbilt Silvio O. Conte Center for Neuroscience Research. 
    "Remarkably, these mice show changes in social behavior and communication from early life that may parallel aspects of ASD," noted first author Jeremy Veenstra-VanderWeele, assistant professor of psychiatry, pediatrics and pharmacology.
    The researchers conclude that a lack of serotonin during development may lead to long-standing changes in the way the brain is wired.

    A new one for the "might cause Autism" list ... IMMIGRATION. Specifically in this study, immigrating to Sweden.

    "This is an intriguing discovery, in which we can see strong links between a certain kind of autism and the time of the mother's immigration to Sweden," says principal investigator Cecilia Magnusson, Associate Professor of epidemiology at Karolinska Institutet. "The study is important, as it shows that autism isn't governed only by but by too."

    The study, which is published in the scientific periodical The shows that children of immigrant parents, particularly from countries of low human development, are disproportionately likely to develop autism with , a connection that appears to be related to the timing of migration rather than complications in childbirth. Children, whose mothers migrated just before or during pregnancy, ran the highest risk of all.

    "At this juncture we can but speculate about the causes, but our assumption is that environmental factors impacting on the developing fetus, such as stress, new or infections, could lead to the development of autism with intellectual disability," says Dr. Magnusson.

    The researchers said the study is the first to link genetics and epigenetics with exposure to a flame retardant chemical. The research was conducted in the offspring of mice genetically engineered for the autism phenotype found in Rett syndrome, a disorder that occurs primarily in females and causes regression in expressive language, motor skills and social reciprocity in late infancy. The condition affects about 1 in 10,000 children.

    Maternal and Paternal age linked to autism. Issue Put to Rest ... right

    Both maternal and paternal age linked to autism:

    ScienceDaily (Feb. 10, 2012) — Older maternal and paternal age are jointly associated with having a child with autism, according to a recently published study led by researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).

    "The researchers compared 68 age- and sex-matched, case-control pairs from their research in Jamaica, where UTHealth has been studying autism in collaboration with The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Kingston, Jamaica.

    "This should put to rest discrepancies in previous studies showing that just maternal age or just paternal age are linked to having a child with autism," said Mohammad Hossein Rahbar, Ph.D., principal investigator and professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at The University of Texas School of Public Health, part of UTHealth."
