Teen with autism hospitalized, mother arrested on attempted murder charge, police say | MLive.com

KALAMAZOO, MI – A teenager recently dismissed from an intensive autism treatment program in Kalamazoo County remains unconscious in a Grand Rapids hospital Thursday morning, suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning authorities say was part of a failed murder/suicide attempt by her mother. 

The 45-year-old Benzie County mother is hospitalized, too, and has been arrested and a warrant authorized charging her with attempted murder; she is under protective custody, according to a news release by the Michigan State Police in Cadillac.Friends have identified the mother as Kelli Stapleton, who has written of her experiences with her 14-year-old daughter, Issy, in a blog, "The Status Woe."

The title of this post, “Want to commit suicide because of my son’s autism” is a keyword search that led someone to my blog this morning.  My heart dropped when I saw this.  The person did not leave a comment, I wish she had.  (I don’t know if it was a he or she, but I’m going to use she to make writing this easier).  The thought that someone is thinking about doing this is scary.  I pray that the commit suicide search on the internet is her way of reaching out for some kind of help.  I know how isolating having a child with autism can be.  For some, reaching out online is the only thing they can do.  This post is a message to that person.

I mentioned yesterday that Joe Scarborough of MSNBC will most likely be feeling the wrath of the autism community over his recent comments made during Monday morning’s edition of “Morning Joe,  that the Batman shooter is probably on the autism spectrum.  Despite having a child of his own on the spectrum, Joe is getting some heat. This is one of those rare moments were lots of factions of the autism community will agree.  This is not in the realm of Michael Savage or Dennis Leary, but Joe should probably clarify his remarks / apologize.

Sunnyvale police: Mother killed 22-year-old autistic son, then herself - Inside Bay Area

A Sunnyvale mother shot and killed her 22-year-old autistic son in his bedroom, then turned the gun on herself, according to police.

Department of Public Safety Capt. Dave Verbrugge said Wednesday that the pair were found about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in a home in the 800 block of Nectarine Ave.

He did not disclose their names or a possible motive.

But one neighbor said that Hodgins told her several times in the last few months that her son was getting increasingly harder to handle, and that she couldn't find a new program to take him.

"She just couldn't do it any more -- take care of him anymore''' said Jacquie Jauch. "She was just tired and very lonely."

Jauch said that Hodgins pleaded with her: "Please help me find a program. I need somewhere to put him. I need a rest."

Blame Game: When a Parent Kills and Autism is Involved in Some Way

It's tempting when these horrifying stories about parents killing their children come out to play the blame game. Indeed, it's something we often can't resist. It's Age of Autism's fault because they present autism as so awful. It's Autism Speaks' fault because of that stupid sentence saying autism is more prevalent than three dreaded diseases. It's everybody who has ever complained about autism. It's everybody's fault but the woman who chose to kill her child. If only there wasn't negative things written about parenting a child with autism that woman wouldn't have done that. She was mentally ill. She chose, whether she was in her right mind or not, to take her child's life. That is not the fault of anyone on the internet, although it is comforting to think so.
