In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, the PBS NewsHour will air a comprehensive six-part special on autism beginning on Monday, April 18. 1 in 110 children in the U.S. is affected by this developmental disorder.

Robert MacNeil, former anchor and co-founder of the NewsHour, is returning from retirement to host the series and will share the personal story of his grandson, Nick, 6, who is on the autistic spectrum. Nick’s story kicks off the series on the 18th and is followed by segments that look at all aspects of the issue, including:

· Prevalence of autism;

· Causes of autism, including discussion of the impact of genetics and the environment;

· Treatment of autism, with a focus on the ABA;

· Adults with autism; and

· A roundtable discussion on public policy
